Greg Oden Makes the Wrong Call

I don’t know about you, but I love to put myself in someone else’s shoes. What is Barack Obama really thinking as he delivers the State of the Union Address? What does Lil’ Wayne do on a day-to-day basis (and is his life actually as ridiculous as he makes it seem)? Some of these questions may be answered some day, others never will. For example, what was Kanye West thinking when he jumped onstage and stole the mic from Taylor Swift? Was he actually thinking, “What I’m about to do is in my best interest”? Also, things like this.

But the ultimate WTF moment may be encapsulated by Greg Oden, Taio Cruz and an episode of Smart Guy.

Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft, is probably best known for a piano solo. That tells you a lot about his NBA career. But Oden’s life just hit a new low. Last year Oden thought it would be a good idea to send his girlfriend nude pictures of himself. This year, he probably wishes he hadn’t. Those pictures recently surfaced, and, well, they were “embarrassing” to say the least.

Why have you not heard about this and/or why is it not newsworthy? Because Oden is not the first person to do this. Far from it. The nude phone-a-thon started with High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens. Then it continued with baseball player Grady Sizemore. And last but not least, Rhianna.

Am I crazy, or is this one of the dumbest things someone can do?

To illustrate my point, I present “Smart Guy“. A fantastic show, “Smart Guy” was about a boy-genius (TJ) who skipped like, every grade, and enrolled in high school. Although it would probably fall somewhere in Peter’s Category 2 for TV shows, it was still a good way to transition from “Arthur” to “Boy Meets World”. On one particularly compelling episode titled “Strangers on the Net,” TJ and his friend are invited to a stranger’s house to “try out a new video game.” They soon learn the stranger wants to take naked pictures of them, so they decided to leave. No questions asked. Not too hard right? Granted, TJ is a 10-year-old in high school and Greg Oden is a 22-year-old college drop-out, but the idea is the same. Never take naked pictures of yourself, but even if you do, NEVER distribute them.

The fact that this has become a trend is absolutely ridiculous. I can’t believe I’m writing a post about how taking and sending naked pictures is now popular. Am I crazy, or is this one of the dumbest things someone can do. And no one would actually advocate, ADVOCATE, doing it, right? Wrong. Taio Cruz wrote an entire song about it. And people wonder why foreigners hate America.
